“Happy birthday to us!” Pickle says, handing me my Super Sister cape. Then she puts a cardboard crown with a gold star on top of my head. She got two matching ones when we went to Bellow’s Arcade. I gave her all the tickets I won playing Skee-Ball and she exchanged them at the prize counter for two crowns.

I put on my crown. “I know. I promise I won’t be late.” I look at my clock, thinking it’s almost time for Dad to surprise us. I bet he’s going to do it at the party. My whole body smiles. I figured it out last night while I was waiting with Cooper. I realized the reason Dad hasn’t said a word about our birthdays must be because he’s coming home to surprise us.

I get ready and still have time before I need to meet Mom and Pickle. I open my computer and there’s a new email from Mr. Baker with more Dear Student letters attached.
